Frederick Douglass (circa_1879)

In celebration of Frederick Douglass Week, February 10 to 17, the Friends of Mount Hope Cemetery present as a gift to you the opportunity to read an inspiring article entitled “Remembering an Icon.” This is the story of Frederick Douglass and his long-term friendship with the Blackalls, an abolitionist family in Rochester. The letters exchanged between Frederick Douglass and the  members of this family reveal his kindness, his love of children, and his affection for his many abolitionist friends in Rochester.

The Frank Blackall gravesite is located in Section M of Mount Hope Cemetery, next to the gravesite of Lucy Colman.

We have permission to share this article, previously published in NYS Archives magazine, thanks to the kindness of author Sally Parker and the New York State Archives Partnership Trust.
