Mount Hope Cemetery, the land we cherish, is the ancestral land of the Onondowaga, “people of the big hill,” also known as the Seneca. Along with the Cayuga, Oneida, Onondaga, Mohawk, and the Tuscarora, the Onondowaga are part of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. We acknowledge the history, suffering, and culture of these original stewards of this land, and we celebrate the future as we work together with the City of Rochester to honor and cherish this legacy.
