On this solemn day of tribute to our fallen soldiers from the past we met at the Civil War plot with members of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln Post #6. Their members led us in a patriotic ceremony to commemorate this day. The cemetery looked perfect and the sun was shining.
The highlight of the gathering was the newly refurbished “Defender of the Flag” statue by Sally James Farnham erected in 1908. The work on this iconic monument was completed only days before the ceremony by Ellison Conservators from Canandaigua. We are grateful to the SUVCW and their leader Ed O’Brien as well as a grant from the Pomeroy Foundation for providing the funds to renew this monument.
